Distinctive Capabilities for Managing Timberland

Our experienced team of professionals can provide a broad range of investment management services for timberland.

Our Approach

U.S. Trust provides professional forestry and land management as well as investment management services for timberland investments. Our services range from acquisition due diligence, investment return management, and potentially managing the land as a recreational destination.

While timber values and growth rates fluctuate, timber may offer the opportunity for long-term appreciation uncorrelated with other assets and markets. Our experienced timberland professionals can develop a plan customized to help meet your goals.

My name is Doug Donnell, I’m the national executive for timberland services, part of specialty asset management in U.S. Trust.

When you look around your life, timber is a tremendous part of it: all of your paper products, the two by four’s and the two by eight’s that make up our homes. You can grow trees, but you also need to know how to make money growing trees.

Timber is not as affected by market stimuli. So it doesn’t matter what’s happening in the overall general markets, trees are going to continue to grow. Some clients are strictly looking for risk diversification, others are looking for return. Still others want to combine a legacy component or a conservation component.

All of our people have very significant and deep experience within the timberland investment industry. We’re foresters, we’ve actually spent our time on the ground with our boots getting muddy.

Our clients expect more from us than simple mechanics, they want a passion in their investment management.

Important Information

Nonfinancial assets, such as closely-held businesses, real estate, oil, gas and mineral properties, and timber, farm and ranch land, are complex in nature and involve risks including total loss of value. Special risk considerations include natural events (for example earthquakes or fires), complex tax considerations, and lack of liquidity. Nonfinancial assets are not suitable for all investors.
Diversification does not eliminate risks.
